SOLD Antique French second Empire Napoleon III Cantinière Tonnelet Canteen

SOLD  Rare Antique 19th century French second Empire Napoleon III period  Cantinière Wooden Tonnelet canteen and shoulder – belt. An oval wooden barrel bound by four hand hammered iron hoops, painted with tricolours, with a brass grenade on the centre. Large brass movable suspension loops, with the original white leather shoulder-belt, adorned with two brass grenade badges, chain and lion mask attachments. The back of the belt is embossed with regimental markings.

CONDITION: Untouched original condition, with a pleasing patina retaining most of the original paint, missing the tap and two brass buttons on one side of the belt. 

MEASUREMENTS: Dimensions of the canteen: length: 24 cm (9 1/2 in). height inclusive.  21.5 cm (8 1/2 in).

A similar French Cantinière from the famous Doctor Raymond Wargnier collection of Napoleonic Militaria, is published in the Sotheby’s catalogue: Belles Armes Anciennes Casques et Objets Militaires  MONACO Lundi 23 Avril 1990. Placed as the first item in the sale, with the lot Number 701, at a price of FF6.000-7.000 (22 years ago).
